Actor Jackie Chan has donated Bt1 million for the education of 192 deserving but economically disadvantaged children of Samui.
Lhin Phing, a representative from the Jackie Chan Foundation, visited the island recently to personally hand out the check to the Koh Samui District Chief Sakchai Jor Phalit.
The handover, done at the Kanchanaphisek Building in Samui, was also attended by other government officials including Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thueksuban, Suratthani Governor Theerayut Iamtrakul and MP Thani Thueksuban, and Ranong Governor Wanchat Wongchaichana.
Ms. Lhin also brought with her clothes, shoes, educational supplies and other goodies for distribution to Samui children from poor families.
The 192 students awarded scholarship by the Hong Kong actor’s foundation was picked from 26 schools around the island.
In brief remarks at the handover ceremony, Ms. Lhin Ling said that Jackie Chan, known among Thais as Choen Long, feels special affinity with the Thai people.
The actor set up the foundation in 1887 primarily to help Hong Kong teenagers deal with social problems and extend scholarship programs to poor but academically out- standing students in other countries.
