Koh Samui Tourism Numbers

The Tourism Association of Koh Samui expects that there will be 20% less European tourists in 2011 than in 2010. In 2010, there were 780000 international tourists arriving on Samui, of which 80% came from Europe.

Expected number of European tourists 2011: 468000 (about 60% of total number of international tourists on Samui).

Average hotel occupancy for January-February 2012 (high season): 70% (used to be 90% in the past).

Average full year occupancy: below 50%

Even though there are now more flights to Samui, the number of seats remains the same: 3000 per day. Ticket prices have gotten more expensive too – they used to be 4700 in the past, and are now 5300.

Hotel openings 2010: 20 (total 300 rooms)

Total number of hotel rooms on Samui: 17000.

Number of new hotel openings expected 2011: 4 to 5

The good news is: room rates will go down this year. Average for a five-star hotel was 5800 in 2010, and is expected to be 5000 in 2011.
